MITIGATION STRATEGIES TO REDUCE COST & DISRUPTION TO HOME OWNERS
You never know when water or fire damage will strike, nor the extent of damage weather will cause. These injuries can be financial, physical, mental, emotional, or a blend of them all.
When water, fire, or smoke damage occurs- or even if you’re facing mold- you may have a feeling of being overwhelmed. However, that doesn’t have to be the case.
There are always things you can do to mitigate the damage and any disruptions it may cause. In this article, we’ll list some ideas to help you minimize the cost and disruption when it comes to water, fire, or mold-related damage.
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE DAMAGE
As soon as you notice damage, even if it appears to be minimal, contact a professional restoration company. Many times, when the damage appears to be insignificant, there is a larger issue and additional damage is hidden. Letting precious hours pass will only increase the severity of the damage.
TRY TO DETERMINE THE SOURCE
In the case of water damage, try to determine where the moisture is coming from and turn off its supply. This may sound obvious, but over the years we have helped many customers who learned this lesson the hard way. They didn’t turn off the water supply, only to end up making the damage significantly worse.
If you don’t know where your main water shut-off valve is, try to locate it so you know exactly where to go if you need to do this in a hurry. If you need help locating your shutoff valve, don’t hesitate to call us.
FIRE & SMOKE DAMAGE
With fire and soot damage, you’ll want to begin the cleaning process immediately. This is because the acidity in soot is detrimental to exposed objects, including;
- Everything Metal- door knobs, hinges, and silverware
- Electronics, furniture, and appliances
- Textiles- garments, upholstery, and curtains
- Marble, Granite, and other similar objects
In the case of minor smoke damage, many of these contents can be cleaned and deodorized on-site. In contrast, in cases of more significant damage, we inventory and pack the contents and bring them to our facility and storage until you and the property are ready for them to return.
MOLD RELATED DAMAGE
Mold is something that you should NEVER take a chance with. If you see or smell even the slightest bit of mold, the best thing to do is call a reputable mold remediation company like Major Restoration. In some cases, the cleanup can be quite minimal and inexpensive. However, if left for long, the project can become much larger and more expensive.
Two very important elements when it comes to mold are time and conditions. Under the right conditions, mold will continue to grow and the problem will become more expensive to remediate. It takes just 24-48 hours under the right conditions for mold to grow.
